When I first started going, doctors and psychologist I was assigned were wonderful, professional, very experienced, non-judgemental and supportive. As I am a professionally trained counsellor, this was what I expected. The doctors I saw helped me with physical problems I was having and the psychologist I was under was supportive and also helped me with matters I needed help with. Unfortunately my psychologist retired and I was reassigned. The first psychologist I saw after this advised me I just needed to start doing the things I enjoy and I would be surprised to find my physical pain would disappear. I explained that my medical condition does not work that way and though I continue to do what I can when I can, the reason I had become so restricted in my activity was due to the pain, swelling, and inflammation, not the other way around. I was told again to just give it a go and I was sure to find one day I could not remember when I last had pain and my life would be back to normal. I am currently attending a specialist clinic elsewhere for some of my pain issues and facing surgery in an attempt to regain some mobility as physio and other methods have not worked, and I had been told beforehand they were unlikely to but worth trying before surgery. I was reassigned another psychologist when the previous one was off sick with no date for return, but have not physically seen this psychologist as yet due to my having to cancel and also on at least one occasion receiving a call from the reception to cancel on her behalf as she was ill. I was only given a couple of hours warning but was ok with it and said I was happy to reschedule when she returned. I had cancelled twice previously when I had the flu and was unable to speak on one occasion, the other time in bed with a fever. Today I cancelled with 4 hours warning once the service was open as I had not been able to sleep at all through the night so not only was I physically drained which does not work well with therapy, I did not feel safe to drive when so overtired. The therapist called later in the afternoon and was not happy I had cancelled and noted I had cancelled before, but never mentioned she had also cancelled. She told me she was very busy and had many clients who wanted to see her and I had left her sitting today for an hour due to my cancellation and that she could have seen one of the many clients who wanted to see her. This is not how I have or ever would handle a conversation with a client who had cancelled. I apologised and explained I had not slept at all the previous night. Again I was chastised and asked was I sure I wanted to come for therapy. Again I said I did but this was not something I had control over. I also mentioned I had just found out my sister in my homeland had been diagnosed with cancer and was going into surgery this week. She said she was sorry for that but that I had wasted her time today by cancelling. Really?!! This is what you say to someone whose sibling thousands of kilometres away is going for cancer surgery in 2 days and a client who has told you she could not sleep all night? I apologised again and she said there was another option, I could let her close my file for now and if I wanted to come back within 6 months I could call and ask to have the file reopened and make an appointment. At this point I agreed to close my file and cancel therapy as to me it did not seem the therapist was interested in making a further appointment with me so I didn't see a point in wasting her time as she put it, or mine. This is so far removed from the psychologist I had seen there before he retired and I wonder if for some reason they are not hiring people with as much experience and insight into their clients. I do not think I will be making that call to reopen my file. I do feel after this upsetting call today that I could use some therapy to process it, but I'm afraid it will not be through this agency.
